Accord had two of its luminaires awarded at the iF Design Award 2023, one of the most important design awards, which takes place annually in Germany and features projects of excellence from all over the world.
Among the more than 2,000 selected participants, Accord was recognized for the Naiá and Nostalgia luminaires, which make reference to Brazilian folklore and popular culture.
While the Naiá luminaire revisits the indigenous legend of Vitória Régia, the "star of the waters", with references to nature and themes essential to human life, Nostalgia refers to simpler times, with Art Deco influence.
Both objects won in the Product category. The award, however, also features eight others: communication design, packaging design, service design, interior architecture, user experience (UX), user interface (UI), and professional concept.

About the iF Design Award
Created in 1953 in Germany, the iF Design Awards is one of the world's leading architecture, interiors, and design awards, with more than 10,000 entries registered in 2023, coming from professionals in 56 countries.
The initiative belongs to the iF Design Foundation NGO, whose goal is to promote socially biased design around the world, independently and free of possible economic interests.
Participants go through a two-stage judging process, in which the jury evaluates criteria such as idea, form, function, differentiation, and impact.
The winners are selected by a jury of 133 independent design experts from 20 countries, in a three-day process.
The relevance of iF Design to architecture and design
Considered by many professionals in the field as the "Oscars of design", the iF Design Award is an important recognition, especially in the areas of design and architecture.
This is because the awarded projects end up representing, for many professionals in the field, a sample of the main market trends for the following years.
The Brazilian growth in the iF Design Award
With 68 awards, the presence of Brazilian designers was one of the highlights of the 2023 edition of the iF Design Award. The number not only represented a new record for the country, but also an improvement in the performance of professionals compared to the previous year.
This year, 145 projects were registered, 51% more than in 2022, and of those, 92 proceeded to the second phase. This means that 47% of the Brazilian projects entered were awarded, a rate higher than the 30% in 2022.
However, it was not only among the participants that Brazilians were present. On the jury panel, there were the architect and designer Guto Raquena, the Product Design specialist Larissa Abad, and the design leader Patrick Speck.
The director of the iF Design Award himself, Frank Zierenberg, highlighted, at the award ceremony, the participation of Brazilian design, which, according to him, presented innovative and creative solutions.
Highlight at the iF Award: influences of folklore and Brazilian culture in Accord luminaires
Among the Accord luminaires that were awarded, Naiá and Nostalgia, what they have in common is the reference to Brazilian culture and history.
Created by designer Bruno Felippe, from Studio Accord, the brand's internal design studio, both pieces have a unique composition and bring different lighting experiences:
Naiá Luminaire
The Naiá line features decorative luminaires inspired by the indigenous legend of the young Naiá, associated with the emergence of the Amazonian plant Vitória Régia.
The story goes that Jaci, a deity associated with the moon, used to descend to earth and take the most beautiful young women she found back to the sky with her, so that they would become the stars.
In love with Jaci, Naiá one day saw the reflection of the moon in the waters of the river and thought it was the deity, who had a place in her heart.
Trying to reach Jaci, Naiá dived and drowned in the waters.
The God then decided to pay homage to the young woman, turning her into a different kind of star: the star of the waters, Vitória Régia.
It is from this legend that the Naiá luminaire is created, structured by metallic carbon steel rods that support a disk, where two light sources are arranged on its different faces, one abundant and the other faint, where wood is highlighted.
This way, it is possible to rotate the disk, positioning the light in different ways and creating various effects, such as the brightness of the moon, the darkness of the night, or the reflection of the satellite in the calm waters of the river.
Thus, the piece not only rescues elements present in the legend, such as the flower, the moon, and the waters, but dialogues with intangible aspects: life, death, and transformation, also present in the narrative.
Nostalgia Luminaire
Finally, another piece recognized with the seal is Nostalgia, an object that seeks to rescue the memory of past times, in a clear reference to Art Deco.
With its modest and classic design, the floor lamp features pure forms and an elegant silhouette, invoking the traditionalism of the past.
One of its differentials is the presence of an opaque dome, which makes the light reach the base of the luminaire gradually, from top to bottom, highlighting its prolonged and sculptural curvature, built from the work of more than 30 collaborators.
