Although widely used outdoors, the sconce can also be an ally in the interior lighting of spaces. With light rays emitted from the wall where it is installed, this luminaire can highlight details and bring elegance to your project.

However, it is necessary to know how to use it, since, by emitting less light, it works as a support lighting source. Understand below what the best models are and the best way to compose this type of luminaire in your project or your home!

What is the difference between a sconce and a lampshade?

In general, lampshades have a downward-facing dome, which facilitates light diffusion. In the case of the sconce, it is more common for it to cast directed light to a specific location, such as the wall, forming a beam.

The truth is that, in practice, this can change. There are lampshades of the most diverse models and styles, with varied domes or even without a dome. Sconces can also emit indirect and diffuse lighting.

The main difference is in the arrangement of the objects, since the sconce is always fixed to the wall. The lampshade can also be on the wall, but there are floor options or the classic table ones.

Main models of sconces

With or without a dome, direct or indirect light: check out the different types of sconces and understand which works best in your home!

With a dome

Similar to a lampshade, the sconce with a dome emits a more diffuse light and, therefore, transmits greater comfort to the eyes and generates a feeling of convenience in the house.

They can be used in spaces with retro-style decorations or even in more formal environments, such as offices. Everything depends on its design and the harmony created with the local decoration.

The Fuchsia sconce, for example, is more delicate and detailed, and can be a good option to illuminate a buffet or a side table.

Direct light

It is the one that emits light directly, with the light beam facing forward. This type of sconce distributes the brightness around the piece.

Due to its greater lighting capacity, it is usually widely used in outdoor areas, as is the case with the turtle type, widely used in gardens and pool areas.

Uplight/Downlight

The characteristics of these sconces correspond exactly to what their names describe in English.

The uplight sconce casts the emitted light upwards. Therefore, they are recommended to illuminate facades or to create indirect lighting in indoor spaces, since the light will bounce off the ceiling.

The downlight sconce casts the light downwards. This makes a part of the wall meet the light beam, creating a feeling of introspection, perfect for decorative lighting.

The Accord Clean is a good example of a downlight sconce, with a modern design that can be used in environments with more available space.

Double effect

Double effect sconces, on the other hand, have different types of openings, which allows them to create varied lighting results.

It is possible, for example, to create a larger light beam downwards and a line of light upwards, or equal light beams in both directions.

The possibility to determine which part of the wall will be enhanced paves the way to highlight decoration details, besides creating a scenic effect in the environment.

What are the advantages of using sconces for lighting?

With new designs, models, and lines, sconces have become a trend among decorators and architects in recent years. Today, they can come in different colors, materials, and sizes.

Among their advantages is the possibility of bringing more complexity to the lighting of an environment, since they produce an indirect or secondary light, fulfilling a complementary function.

The sconce also brings more details to the decoration and can be used to highlight the wall texture or to compose the lighting of outdoor spaces.

What are the most suitable places to install the sconce?

This is one of the positive points of the sconce: it can be used anywhere, both indoors and outdoors.

Outdoor areas

In gardens and house facades, it is important to use suitable models for this space, which have protection against rain, winds, and climate changes.

However, it is still necessary to check if the sconce was safely installed, without leaving any exposed wire.

Indoor environments

Sconces made for indoor environments usually have more details and, thus, contribute to the decoration of the environment.

They are recommended for small environments, since they reduce the number of items on tables and sideboards. But they can also be used in wide environments, giving prominence to specific points.

In the bedroom, they can offer indirect lighting at the head of the bed, which helps the resting moment prior to sleep. There is the possibility of using it as a substitute for the lampshade.

In places that require greater concentration, like the office or the kitchen, the ideal is that it has greater prominence in the lighting, since they are spaces where it is necessary to see better.

They are also recommended for hallways, where they illuminate the passage and provide greater safety to those passing by. In this case, they can also create decorative effects without polluting the look.

Another place where they can be is the bathrooms and washrooms, where they also help to create decorative effects. Besides, their diffuse and support light can provide ideal relaxation environments for those who have a bathtub.

Tips for combining the sconce with other lighting elements!

Before buying sconces, it is important to have in mind a plan for the lighting of your house, since this type of luminaire is used to complement the main lighting of an environment.

Sconces usually emit indirect light and, for this, they need a parallel surface that reflects the illumination. It is the perfect opportunity to enhance a coating or a texture of your wall.

They can also be used to replace centralized lighting. In this case, they must work with other lighting points, since, by themselves, they do not emit enough light for a whole space.
